Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC

Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City is the founding chapter of the world’s premier youth mentoring organization. Since 1904, its mission has

been to provide mentors to all the children who need caring adult role models – special friends who can help expand their horizons, realize their

potential and enrich their futures – changing their lives.

The Asian Mentoring Committee (AMC)

Our mission is to provide support to Asian communities, especially recent immigrant families transitioning to New York City by recruiting new

mentors, creating exposure and awareness, and offering peer support to one-to-one Mentoring relationships.

The Asian Mentoring Committee is a grassroots group of socially conscious volunteers interested in providing support to Asian communities,

especially recent immigrant families transitioning to New York City. Over 20,000 Chinese children are living in poverty in NYC and as volunteers with

BBBS of NYC, the AMC shares their experiences and helps these immigrant youth overcome the unique obstacles they face by supporting the New

American Program. AMC volunteers help promote the mission of BBBS-NYC through: raising awareness in Asian communities, creating and

coordinating mentor recruitment activities, hosting “match events” for NAP’s Bigs and Littles, and through special fundraising events, including the

upcoming inaugural Night Market event. There are currently 400 AMC numbers and we continue to grow!

The goal of this event

The goal of this annual event is to expand the reach of the New American Program to support more Big-Little mentoring

matches. The mission of the New American Program is to help immigrant youth overcome the unique obstacles they may face while adjusting to a new culture, language and customs. These youngsters' feelings of loneliness, isolation and prejudice as well as the stress of negotiating between their cultural traditions and the urban American environment are addressed through relationships with their mentors. Participants in the program represent over 55 nations and 34 languages.

The eventual goal is to raise sustainable funding ($50,000 a year) to support an additional NAP social worker

to supervise additional matchers.
